Commentaires : With an absolute top-drawer cast and production team, and with a superb animatronic pig (voiced by none less than Kylie Minogue) this was a perfectly timed show set in 1947 austerity Britain at the time of a Royal Wedding ... thus echoing 2011 Britain in a deep recession with the forthcoming Royal Wedding of William and Katharine.
Commentaires longs: It began previews on March 19th, which included a gala charity performance in aid of the Grenadier Guards and in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh. It was reported that the Prince and the attending guardsmen all laughed heartily throughout the show. With just a few dissenting voices, the show received mostly very good notices praising the excellent performances, memorable score and excellent choreography. However, it simply failed to catch on with the public and was taken off on September 24th.

Commentaires : Based on “The Philadelphia Story” by Philip Barry and the MGM film “High Society”. There was heavy criticism for the casting of non-singers -Natasha Richardson, Trevor Eve and Stephen Rea - in a musical, and for a number of occasions when the cast were obviously miming to pre-recorded tracks. (On August 10th major cast changes had Patrick Ryecart, Steven Pacey and the American Julie Osburn replacing the three main leads). The scenery was heavy, clunky and impractical and the production rather over-blown with an onstage orchestra being trucked forward, backwards and sideways in Wurlitzer juke-box shaped bandstands.

Commentaires : The musical had been re-worked to incorporate more of the original P.L.Travers’ stories than had appeared in the film, and to remove some of the cartoon effects. The children were ruder and more snobbish, Mrs Banks no longer quite so dizzy, Mr Banks more workaholic, and Mary Poppins herself far more eccentric and formidable than Julie Andrews. It played two months of try-outs at the Bristol Hippodrome before moving into the West End. All in all this was more “real” and less “cockneyfied” than the film. It was also a technically awe-inspiring show with its special effects, including Bert tap-dancing up one side of the proscenium arch and then continuing upside-down until descending on the other side, and, of course, Mary Poppins flying over the heads of the audience at the finale.
Commentaires longs: It received a triumphant critical reception, won two Olivier Awards (Best Performance in a Musical & Best Choreography), and ran for three years, finally closing on January 12th 2008. (The Broadway production, starring Ashley Brown and Gavin Lee opened in November 2006 and celebrated its fifth birthday in November 2011.) Productions have been mounted in Australia, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic and Canada and have undertaken tours in the UK and USA.

Commentaires : The original production was directed by Richard Eyre along with co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear. The production had an out of town tryout in Bristol before opening in the West End in December 2004 at the Prince Edward Theatre, making it the only Disney musical to premiere in the UK. The original cast featured Laura Michelle Kelly in the role of Mary Poppins for which she went on to win the 2005 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Mary Poppins the Musical transferred to Broadway, opening at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 16, 2006.
